Notes for Lewis Lesher MAURER

The Rev. Lewis Lesher Maurer, 64, entered eternal life on Saturday, Decem ber 30, 2006, at home. He was the devoted and loving husband of Gloria Bowers Burr. Born October 13, 1942, in Hershey, he was the son of the late Lewis Joseph Maurer and Elizabeth Balderston Maurer. Rev. Maurer graduated from Hershey High School, from Hershey Junior College, from Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religion, from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, with a Masters of Divinity, and studied at the Lancaster Theological Seminary toward his Doctorate in Ministries. In 1969, Rev. Maurer, as an ordered elder of The United Methodist Church, was granted Ecclesiastical Endorsement for an appointment as Chaplain with the Unites States Army. Chaplain Maurer served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division during which he was awarded the Bronze Star as one of many medals he earned during his 23 year military career. He served as hospital chaplain and post administrative chaplain at Fort McClellan. During a three year post in West Germany, he served as unit chaplain. He then returned to Anniston Army Depot in Alabama, followed by a post as Brigade Chaplain for two years in Korea. After returning from Korea, Chaplain Maurer was an instructor at the U.S. Army Aviation School at Fort Rucker, Ala. He then requested to be stationed back home to complete his Army career as Post Chaplain at Ft. Indiantown Gap. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1989. The Methodist Church then assigned Rev. Maurer as pastor of the Christ United Methodist Church in Harrisburg, followed by a reassignment to Barts Centenary United Methodist Church, Littlestown. He retired from his ministry as a counselor and supervisor of Mountain Manor Treatment Center, Emmitsburg, Md. In addition to his great love of his ministry to God and country, Lew was devoted to family and his many other interests of continuing his education, horseback riding, reading, and chess to name a few. During the last five years he was an avid educator to all concerning the healing of the mind, body, and spirit. The celebration of Rev. Maurer's life was held Sunday, January 7, 2007, at Trinity United Church of Christ, Hanover, with the Rev. Bradley E. Rentzel officiating and Dr. Thomas R. Stoner delivering the eulogy. Interment with military honors was provided by American Legion Post 321 and the Littlestown Allied Veterans Council with a flag presentation in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Littlestown. Christopher Burr was the bugler. Little's Funeral Home, Littlestown, was in charge of the arrangements.
