Deceased Name: MARY HOPE SMITH PUSEY DIES IN LEXINGTON AT 75
Mary Hope Smith Pusey of Lexington, a longtime advocate of services to the mentally disabled, died Saturday. She was 75.
Mrs. Pusey was born in Munday, Texas, and was graduated from Westmoreland College in San Antonio, now Trinity University, in 1935. She held a master's degree from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Although she operated several farms in Texas, she spent most of her life in Lexington, where she became involved in many civic, church and community activities.
Mrs. Pusey was active in volunteer work at Lexington Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for more than 40 years. She held numerous memberships and official posts in community organizations, including stints as conservation chairman and admissions chairman of the Garden Club of Virginia. She was president, during 1952-54, of the Blue Ridge Garden Club, during which time she was a leader in the preservation of Goshen Pass, now a state park.
In the early 1960s, Mrs. Pusey became an advocate of better services for the mentally ill and mentally retarded.
Mrs. Pusey's survivors include her husband, William W. Pusey III, professor and dean emeritus of Washington and Lee University; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Faith Pankin of Arlington and Mrs. Diana Pickral of Charlottesville; and a sister, Mrs. Virginia S. Moore.
A graveside service for Mrs. Pusey will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery.
