Notes for Joseph Wilhelm DREXEL
Joseph William Drexel (1833-1888) banker, philanthropist, partner of Baring Brothers in London and Rothschild et Fis in Paris.
The youngest son of Francis Martin Drexel joined the family’s banking firm like his elder brothers Francis and Anthony. Due to his younger age, he never became an equal partner though and left the firm in 1875, after he clashed with John Pierpont Morgan and was rebuked by his elder brother Anthony, who sided with the latter. Joseph Drexel had been a partner in Drexel, Harjes & Company and had also represented the parent company in Germany for some time. He retired a millionaire and art collector, leaving valuable paintings to the Metropolitan Museum of New York and books to the Lenox Library. Joseph William Drexel married Philadelphia socialite Lucy Wharton and had several daughters, one of them the tragic Bessie Lehr who later became Mrs Beresford. Joseph William Drexel’s eldest daughter Katherine married Charles Bingham Penrose, a brother of Senator Boies Penrose.
