Dorothy B. "Doffy" (Bettle) Delano, 88, of Naples, Fla., died Sunday, June 29, 2008, in Bentley Village Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late George Delano Jr.
Born in Haverford, Penn., a daughter of the late Griscom Bettle and the late Dorothy Gill (Ball) Bettle, she lived in Gladwyn, Penn., for many years, moving to Little Compton in 1952 and Adamsville in 1954 as she and her husband built a home in Westport Harbor. They later lived in Westport Harbor while wintering in Naples, Fla., before making Naples a permanent home and continuing to summer in Westport Harbor.
She was a graduate of Chatham Hall in Virginia, Class of 1937, and also studied art. An amateur architect, she designed a number of homes.
An avid golfer, Mrs. Delano was a member of The Country Club of Naples and Bentley Village, Naples. She was also a member of the Acoaxet Club in Westport Harbor where in 1980 she won the Woman's, the Handicap and the Senior Championships —all in the same year.
She leaves four sons, John R. Greenwood Jr. of Driggs, Idaho, Peter H. Greenwood of Cape Elizabeth, Me., David B. Greenwood of Wilkesboro, N.C., and Richard G. Greenwood of Reading, Penn.; a step-son, George "Terry" Delano III, of South Hero, Vt.; a sister, Edie Gardner of Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, great grandchildren, step-step great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was step-mother of the late Roxane Delano.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, July 5, at 11 a.m. in the United Congregational Church, The Commons, Little Compton. Burial will be private.
