Notes for Mary Ann TAYLOR
Mary Ann Taylor (Dede) Brokaw, 92, died on January 3, 2013. Dede lived at Stonegates Retirement Community in Greenville, Delaware.
Her parents were Martha Young Johnson and Thomas Clarkson Taylor, of Wilmington, Delaware. Dede was born on March 1, 1920, in Wilmington, and lived in New Castle as a girl. She attended Tower Hill School and The Tatnall School in Wilmington; Low-Heywood School in Connecticut; and the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She married Howard Pyle Brokaw in 1942 in Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, and lived successively in: Wilmington; Penns Grove, New Jersey; Old Greenwich, Connecticut; New Castle and Wilmington; Akron, Ohio; and, returning to Wilmington, for 45 years in Greenville.
Dede was a kind and selfless person, dedicating herself to her family and volunteer work. She volunteered at Stan Hywet Hall in Akron and at Winterthur, the Delaware Historical Society, and the Junior League in Wilmington. Dede was an adventurous person and traveled widely to Alaska, India, Europe, Africa, Australia, the south Indian Ocean, and to remote areas of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. In her life and travels, she was at home with the elite of cities and common people of the wilds.
She is survived by Howard Brokaw of Stonegates; her sister, Patricia Burnett Crichton of New Castle; her children, Thomas Clarkson Taylor Brokaw of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; Nicholas Van Liew Brokaw of San Juan, Puerto Rico; Jeffrey Johnson Brokaw of Vancouver, British Columbia; and Clotilda Brokaw Heimbuch of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
