William D. Mathewson "Pat"
Age 82, passed away peacefully at his Wilmington, DE, home on Thursday July 2, 2009, of melanoma.
Pat was born in Henry Clay, Delaware, to the late F. Leslie Mathewson, Sr. and Elizabeth (Robinson) Mathewson. He was the descendent of early Swedish and Dutch ancestors who immigrated to New Sweden about 1654 and made their home on the north side of the Brandywine Creek. Pat took great pride in being a "creeker" - someone being born and reared on the Brandywine Creek. He attended Alexis I. DuPont School and was drafted into the Army in 1945 during his senior year. He served in the Philippines and Japan. After discharge, he completed his senior year at P.S. DuPont High School. He attended Temple University and the University of Delaware. He was a craft supervisor at the DuPont Experimental Station retiring in 1986 with 38 years of service. He bred, trained and showed AKC Champion Chesapeake Bay Retrievers under the name of DeNemours Kennels, Reg. His dogs accomplished numerous titles in AKC Shows and Obedience Trials. He was a life member of the Wilmington Kennel Club, Inc. serving the club as an Officer, Show Chairman and was Delegate to the American Kennel Club for more than 20 years. Later, European travel and caravanning with his Airstream Travel Trailer became his interest. Pat was a member of three units of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, Inc. He visited all 50 states of the U.S. and all the provinces of Canada. He was also a member of the International Caravanning Association. As a young man, he was an active member of the Talleyville Fire Company and the Delaware State Fire Police Association. He was a fireman at heart to the very end. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
Pat is survived by his wife of 44 years, MaryJane (Hammond) Mathewson; a sister, Jane M. Pyle of Denver, CO and 3 nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Alice M. (Skipper) Blackburn; a brother, Frank J. Mathewson, Jr. and 2 nephews.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Kathir Suppiah, MD and his staff for their kindness shown to Pat. Also, an extra special thank you to Wendy Strowhouer, RN for her efficient gentle care and to the Compassionate Care Hospice staff for being so thoughtful.
