Notes for Mary Jane DU PONT

News Journal, The (Wilmington, DE) - September 20, 2001
Deceased Name: Lunger, Jane
Jane duPont Lunger Jane duPont Lunger died early Tuesday morning, September 18, 2001 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, maintaining her faith, dignity, and clarity of mind and spirit throughout her illness. Born in 1914, the daughter of Philip Francis duPont and Elizabeth Braxton Horner, she was raised in Fairville, PA, and was married to Harry William Lunger at the age of nineteen. Together they forged a devoted partnership, their lives focused on their five children, but sharing a multitude of interests, which have created a lasting impact throughout the Delaware community. Their children were given the freedom to develop as distinct individuals, but encouraged to act as responsible citizens and to respect and try to be understanding of the views of others. Her grandchildren were particularly blessed to have known her well and to have been influenced by her strong beliefs and her loyalty and guidance whenever they were in need. She often quipped that her favorite child was always the one "in the doghouse," which inevitably, at some point, included each one! Her intuitive, intelligent and feisty personality was manifest in the dichotomy of her two great passions beyond her family-the Episcopal Church and her thoroughbred racing dynasty, Christiana Stables. As active members of the Christ Church vestry, she and Harry attended many national conferences and, throughout her life, she participated in weekly intercessory prayer meetings. Later joining the congregation of Immanuel Church, Highlands, she contributed to countless projects and was mentor to numerous individuals in need. Following her husband's death, she bequeathed their family home, "Oberod," to the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware to be maintained as a conference and prayer center. In 1937, with the legalization of horseracing in Delaware and the opening of Delaware Park, the Lungers purchased their first race horse and embarked upon a lifelong adventure and passion for racing and breeding thoroughbreds. Among their most notable accomplishments were the campaign of the Champion filly Go for Wand and their unprecedented four victories in the Delaware Handicap. In 1980, Jane Lunger was the honored lady guest of the Thoroughbred Club of America. Throughout her sixty-five years in racing, owing to her warmth and spontaneity, she was as popular with the fans as the champions she raced and was dubbed by the racing press as "a Queen in the sport of Kings." Additional beneficiaries of her attention were the National Society of the Colonial Dames, the Mayflower Association, the Delaware Theatre Company, Planned Parenthood, the Delaware Nature Conservancy, the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation, and New Bolton Center School of Veterinary Medicine. Two sons, Harry David Lunger and Robert Brett Lunger, and her daughters, Ann Lunger Jones and Mary Lunger McKay, 19 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren survive her. Her other son, Philip duPont Lunger, predeceased her this spring. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 21, 2001, at 3 pm, at Immanuel Church, Highlands, 2400 W. 17th St., Wilmington, DE, 19806. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either Immanuel Church or the American Cancer Society, 92 Read's Way, New Castle, DE, 19720. 0000129826
