John Carroll Pennock, 82 Worked on the Manhattan Project; held many patents
BREWSTER - John Carroll Pennock, 82, died Sunday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, of complications of surgery.
He was the longtime companion of Beverly Cody.
Mr. Pennock was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., and spent his early years in the Philadelphia suburb of Cynwyd.
He attended Lower Merion High School and Cornell University.
During World War II, he served in the Special Engineers Detachment at Oak Ridge, Tenn., where he worked on the Manhattan Project.
After his service he completed his studies at Cornell, graduating in 1946. He entered the field of mechanical engineering and held several patents in inert gas welding and high-speed photography.
Mr. Pennock wrote ''Please God, Us First,'' a historical account of his WWII detachment, and devoted his time in his later years to the Andrew MacPhail Foundation in Orwell, Prince Edward Island, and to the anctestral home of his family, Primitive Hall in Kennett Square, Pa.
He was a member of the Beta Omicron chapter of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, the Writers in Group of Prince Edward Island and Wellfleet Writers Group.
Besides his companion, survivors include five children, William and Christopher Pennock, Bruce and Thane Tierney and Laurie Vatcher; and 12 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Wellfleet Public Library, 55 W. Main St.
