Notes for Vernon Swayne MERCER
Vernon S. Mercer, 86, of Montpelier, Vt., passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2010.
He was the son of the late J. Walter Mercer and the late Mary Mercer (nee Swayne).
Vern was born Dec. 10, 1921, in Wilmington, Del., and was raised in Mendenhall.
He graduated from Kennett High School in 1943 and furthered his education with a degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University in 1947.
Vern married Frances Phelps in 1948 and together they raised five children.
In his 43-year working career with IBM, Vern was assigned to the Philadelphia and later the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., office.
After retirement in 1990, he and Frances moved to Vermont. Sadly, not long after, Frances lost her battle with cancer in July 1991.
He was the beloved father of Rodney Mercer, Barton Mercer and his wife, Heide, Lauren Parker and her husband, Wes, Darren Mercer and his wife, Anna, and Pam Mola and her husband, Doug; grandfather of Christine, Jason, Brian, Michael, Becky, Emily, Natalie, Dayna, Luke, Kate, Samantha and Kyle; and brother of Lowell Mercer.
His funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, at the Longwood Funeral Home of Matthew Genereux Inc., 913 E. Baltimore Pike in Kennett Square, where a visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Burial will follow in Longwood Cemetery.
