Notes for Robert Morris WAY

Robert Morris Way, 78, who for many years ran a cut-flower business in Kennett Square, died of cancer Thursday at his home at the Crosslands in Kennett Square.
From the late 1940s until retiring in 1986, Mr. Way served as president of Way's Greenhouses Inc., which his father and an uncle started in the early 1900s. After retiring, he remained active in the business, serving as treasurer.
The company, now run by his son, Frank T. Way, grows and supplies a variety of cut flowers, including roses, to florists within a 50-mile radius.
Mr. Way graduated from Kennett High School and from Drexel University with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.
For several years after graduating from college, he worked for the former Lenape Forge Co. in Kennett Square.
In the 1960s and early 1970s, Mr. Way worked to bring affordable, minority-owned housing to the Kennett Square and Lincoln University areas through the Kennett Area Joint Action Committee, an interracial organization, his son said.
Mr. Way was a member of the Kennett Friends and served as business manager of Friends general conferences throughout the area. He also was a member of the former Kennett Little Theater, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the Delaware Valley chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society.
In addition to his son, Mr. Way is survived by his wife of 52 years, Katherine Burton Way; daughters Deborah Lanahan Brumbaugh, Martha Baldwin Way and Rebecca Bergus; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 18 at the Kennett Friends Meetinghouse, Route 82 and Sickel Street, Kennett Square. His body was cremated.
