Mystic - William Bass Smith, 93, of Judson Avenue, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Lawrence (and) Memorial Hospital, New London.
He was born Jan. 13, 1911, in Marshallton, Del., the son of Joseph Henderson and Estelle Cranston Smith.
He was the husband of Julia Francis Smith who predeceased him.
Mr. Smith graduated from the University of Delaware in 1933 with a degree in electrical engineering. He served in the United States Army during World War II and later worked for the Department of the Navy until his retirement in 1967. He was Past Master of the Theodore Roosevelt Lodge of Masons in Washington, D.C., and was a member of the Potomac Power Squadron and instructor for their boating safety course. He was also a MARS radio network operator.
He is survived by two sons, Cranston Smith and his wife Matilde of New Iberia, La., and Marshall Smith and his wife Mary Lou of Mystic; a daughter, Deborah S. Page of Satellite Beach, Fla.; a sister, Anna Belle Hall of Wilmington, Del.; six grandchildren, Christina S. Fitzpatrick, Jennifer S. Russo, Joseph W. Smith, Brian M. Smith, Michael E. Smith and Elizabeth M. Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Lilikali Smith, Isabella and Anthony Russo and Oliver S. Fitzpatrick.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm Smith, and a sister, Helen Samworth.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, Mystic. Interment will be private in Delaware. There are no calling hours.
