Notes for Sheila TATNALL
Sheila Tatnall Nalle, 64, who worked to help children in the developing countries where her husband served as a Foreign Service officer, died Friday. She was a resident of Chevy Chase, Md.
Born in Philadelphia, she attended Springside Elementary School and graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in political science.
After college, she became private secretary to Theresa Helburn, founder of the Theater Guild in New York City, and later secretary to the renowned stage designer Jo Melziener.
In 1953, she married Foreign Service officer Beauveau Nalle, also from Philadelphia, and traveled with him to three posts in Turkey, as well as to Uganda, Liberia, Belize and Switzerland.
While living in Uganda, she was active in children's health programs and was president of the American Community School Board, an international school. She was also active in school and youth work in Liberia.
During her years in Izmir, Turkey, Mrs. Nalle worked closely with Professor Kenan Erim as a member of the Friends of Aphrodisias, a support group for Erim's archaeological work at the ancient city of Aphrodisias in Western Anatolia.
She loved gardening and developed an interest in cultivating orchids.
Besides her husband, she is survived by daughters, Elizabeth and Ann; two grandsons; her mother, Mrs. H. C. Tatnall, and a brother.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Rock Creek Parish, Webster Street N.W., Washington, D.C. Burial will be at Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington.
