Notes for Ashton Tatnall STEWART

November 30, 2014 Dr. Ashton T. Stewart, 97, of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, entered into rest on Sunday, November 30, 2014. Born in Philadelphia he was a son of the late Charles R. and Sara (Tatnall) Stewart. His wife Natalie died in 2012.Ashton graduated from Germantown High School in 1935, went on to Hampton Sydney College in VA and received his BS degree. He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. A Captain in the Army, he served in Dachau, Germany in the medical corps. In 1947 Dr. Ashton went to Iran as a medical missionary and served as the director of three different mission hospitals in Tabriz, Mashhad and Hamadan. He served in Afghanistan with International Afghan Mission for 4 years. During the 1980s he opened a physical therapy school. He finished his medical career serving as Chief of Rehabilitation Medicine Service at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV.He and his late wife Natalie move to Quarryville in 2001. They were members of Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church.Surviving are children: Rev. Ashton (Patty) Stewart, Rev. Leonard (Julie) Stewart, Mrs. Peggie (Andrew) Ray, Mr. William (Marty) Stewart, Mrs. Louise (Paul) Kemp and Mrs. Ruth (Michael) Wilkes along with 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and a brother, James (Susan) Stewart. He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell C. Stewart.Services will be held at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community on Friday, December 12, 2014 beginning at 11:00 AM. There will be a traditional burial in the Quarryviile Cemetery prior to the service on Friday at 10:00 AM with military honors provided by Lancaster Red Rose Honor Guard.
