Notes for Henry Tatnall Jr. BROWN

H. Tatnall "Tat" Brown, 83, retired banker, educator and civic leader, died Saturday night at a nursing home in Bryn Mawr. He lived in Bryn Mawr.
Former dean of Haverford College and assistant secretary of Girard Bank, he immersed himself in civic activities - ranging from the arts to the United Fund.
A graduate of William Penn Charter School, Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania, he did his graduate work at Columbia University, Penn's Wharton School and the American Institute of Banking.
He served in both World Wars. As a teenager, he volunteered his way into the Army and served in France during the First World War. He held the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy during the World War II.
Mr. Brown served as an instructor and dean of Haverford College from 1927 to 1942, when he left for Navy service. When he returned he served as assistant manager of the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1947, he joined the old Girard Trust Corn Exchange Bank and rose to the post of assistant secretary.
He served as a member of the board of overseers at William Penn Charter School for more than 50 years, long served as trustee of the Charles Morris Price School and was active in the Poor Richard Club.
A past president of the Orpheus Club and of the Philadelphia Public Relations Association, he also served as a director of the Easter Seal campaign, of the Philadelphia Society for Crippled Children and Adults, of the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee and of the American Red Cross.
He was active in the Girl Scouts, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Philadelphia Arts Festival Committee and the Festival of the Fountains. He was vice president of the Bryn Mawr Civic Association and served as a judge of elections.
He retired from the business world 18 years ago to devote his time to his civic interests, as well as to his interests in music and gardening. He collected autographs and first editions.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie, and a brother.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Haverford Friends Meeting. Contributions in his name may be made to Haverford College or William Penn Charter School.
