Royce Norwood Flippin, a retired investment banker, died last Thursday at the Van Dyk Manor Nursing Home in Montclair, N.J. He was 85 years old and lived in Upper Montclair, N.J.

Mr. Flippin retired as a vice president of Smith, Barney & Company in 1969, after 22 years with the company. He had worked for other securities concerns from 1928 until joining the Navy in World War II.

Survivors include his wife, the former Elizabeth Bellah; three daughters, Carol Colavito of West Orange, N.J., Molly Baker of Union, N.J., and Doreen F. Scanlan of Upper Montclair; two sons, Royce Jr., of Winchester, Mass., and John, of Glen Ridge, N.J.; three sisters, Susan Menborn, Ethelberta Maguire and Ruth Isenbarger, all of Somerset, Ky.; two brothers, Eugene, of Green Valley, Ariz., and Walter, of Beaufort, S.C., and nine grandchildren.
