Notes for Anne Tatnall CANBY

Anne Canby Winchester
Age 98, died peacefully Thursday, March 9, 2006 at Stonegates Health Center.
The daughter of Marjorie Tatnall Bush Canby and Henry Mathews Canby, both of Wilmington, DE, Anne was an independent thinker and a lover of her family, friends, and learning. Her intellectual curiosity led her to a wonderful experience at the Academy of Lifelong Learning, where she studied Ancient Greek and visited Oxford University among other pursuits. And always close to her heart were the hills and contours of the Brandywine Valley, which she had explored enthusiastically during her childhood.
Anne was a long time member of The Garden Club of Wilmington and actively participated in many projects. She volunteered for a number of years at the Delaware Center for Horticulture. She was also a member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Delaware and served as President in 1959.
Anne was educated at Tower Hill School and The Master School, Dobbs Ferry, NY.
Family, friends, and all who encountered her will long remember the warm interest Anne took in others and her wonderful sense of humor. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George Winchester. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Anne W. Penniman and Judith W. Spruance; her sons-in-law, Caleb J. Penniman and William C. Spruance; by 5 grandchildren, Mary Moran, George Penniman, Caleb Penniman, Jr., Palmer Spruance and Will Spruance, and by 7 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at 11 am at the Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church, 101 Old Kennett Rd., Centerville, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made to The Delaware Nature Society, PO Box 700, Hockessin, DE 19707 or to the Delaware Center for Horticulture, 1810 N. du Pont Street, Wilmington, DE 19806-3308.
