Notes for Eleanor M. WOLLASTON
Eleanor Wollaston Hawthorne, died peacefully on February 10, 2013, in Linden Hall. Having lived on the family farm, Maple Lawn Farm, for the majority of her life, she resided at the Friends Home in Kennett for the past 29 years. She was the wife of the late Ralph L. Hawthorne with whom she shared eight years of marriage, until his death in 1983.
Born January 8,1917, she was the daughter of the late Howard C. and Ellen Mitchell Wollaston.
A 1935 graduate of Kennett High School, she also attended Beacom College in Wilmington, DE.
Eleanor was employed as a secretary in the accounting department at the DuPont Company for 32 years, retiring in 1975.
She was a lifelong member of New Garden Friends Meeting and also a member of London Grove Grange, West Grove BPW, and the New Garment Association. For many years, Eleanor volunteered at the Jennersville Regional Hospital and was also a Hospice volunteer at Linden Hall. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, traveling, collecting owls, and especially her trips to Woodside Creamery for ice cream, at the farm where her mother was raised, which is still owned by the Mitchell family.
A loving, kind and generous aunt who led by example, she was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her two nephews, Thomas Wollaston (Mary) and Robert Wollaston, five nieces, Margaret Empet (Dale), Martha Johnson (Stephen), Nancy McMahon (William), Catherine Guest (Stanley) and Elizabeth Stahlnecker (Kevin), fifteen great-nieces and nephews and six great-great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, J. Paul and Charles T. Wollaston and a niece, Jane Wollaston.
