Notes for Nathan Pennypacker Jr. STAUFFER

Nathan Pennypacker Stauffer Jr. died on November 28, 2011. Born on December 14, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Dr. Nathan P. Stauffer and Anna Liddon Pennock. He graduated from Episcopal Academy in 1935 where he played varsity baseball and was captain in his senior year. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939 with a BS degree from the Wharton School, where he played varsity baseball for three years and was a member of the Friars Senior Honor Society. After graduation, he began employment with Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland. He entered the army during World War II in March of 1943, and served for four years, receiving his commission as an officer assigned to the Office Chief of Ordinance in the Pentagon, Washington, DC. He returned to Fidelity and Deposit Company after the war. He was with the company for forty years, eventually becoming the Resident Vice-President in charge of the Philadelphia and Harrisburg offices. "Nate" always had a love of the sea and began sailing during his summers in Ocean City, New Jersey. He went on to racing and sailing Star boats, and then into the cruising class of big boats. He spent many years ocean racing with Ray Scott, as Ray's first mate in the crew. Nate also had a special interest in squash and served on several committees at the Merion Cricket Club, where he met his wife. They became a successful doubles team. He is survived by his wife, Jane Austin whom he married on March 7, 1953, and their three children, Suzanne Northrop Raboy of Binghamton, New York, Penny Cooper of Decatur, Georgia, and G. Scott Stauffer of North Wales, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by three grandchildren - Daniel, Sarah and Andrew Cooper, and a niece, Johanne S. Albright, daughter of his sister, Anne S. Dixon, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee. He is also survived by his sister in law, Suzanne Ott, of Haverford, Pennsylvania, and nieces and nephews on his wife's side, Diana Wilder of Haverford, Pennsylvania, Amy Alexander of Hartland, Vermont, John Austin of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and Steve Austin of Atlanta, Georgia. Services were private for the family.
