Deceased Name: Roger Pennock Jr.
Roger Pennock Jr., retired professor of agronomy and lifelong (birthright) Quaker, died on Friday, June 14, 2002, in Blanc Sablon, Quebec, while on a photography trip.
Born on April 4, 1923, in Medford, N.J., he was a son of Roger and Mary Tatnall Pennock. Upon graduation from Westtown Friends School in 1941, he returned to the family farm.
He met his wife, Elizabeth, at Earlham College, from which he graduated in 1953. He earned an M.S. from Cornell in 1958 and a Ph.D. from Michigan State in 1964.
He was on the Penn State faculty from 1964 to 1990. From 1967 to 1972, he lived and worked in Pune, India, on an AID/Penn State project to increase food production. He was the coach of the Penn State soil judging team for many years.
A much-loved teacher and adviser, he received many awards, including the 1981 Golden Key National Honor Society Outstanding Penn State faculty member and the 1984 Penn State Amoco Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award. In 1986, he was named Penn State's first Teaching Fellow, the Alumni/Student Award for Excellence in Teaching.
He enjoyed gardening and slide photography. He traveled to remote places to photograph scenery and wildlife. A member of the State College Color Slide Club, he won national and international awards. He was an active member of the State College Friends' Meeting. His kindness, consideration and warm smile endeared him to all.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth Haines Pennock; his son Robert T. Pennock; his daughter, Mary P. Sears; three grandchildren, Sarah Sears, Hannah Sears, and Laura Pennock; and his brother, Edward T. Pennock. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Pennock.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 23 at the Friends Meeting at 611 E. Prospect Ave., State College. A private burial will be held at the Friends Cemetery, Halfmoon Township. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to Foxdale Village Community Fund, in care of Foxdale Village, 500 E. Marylyn Ave., State College PA 16801.
