Notes for Anthony HEGER
Anthony Heger was a doctor in the army with the rank of captain assigned to the Benicia Barracks when he received orders assigning him to Fort Simcoe in south-eastern Washington November 15, 1856. He and his new wife, travelled by steamer from San Francisco to Portland Anna Heger spent the trip in her stateroom being seasick, most likely because she was pregnant . From Portland they went up the Columbia River, first in a sidewheel river boat and then overland with a four mule team and even in a small row boat finally arriving at Fort Simcoe sometime in March 1857. Making a 4 month trip while pregnant under pretty primitive conditions is pretty amazing.
Anthony Heger was a career Army doctor. He studied in Austria and then took his degree as a physician at the University of Pennsylvania and entered the regular army as an assistant surgeon in I856. Dr. Heger served in many locations. After leaving Fort Simcoe in 1859 he served at Fort Vancouver until 1862, then he served in Pittsburg (1866), Fort Snelling Minnesota Territory (1870 – 1875), Willets Point NY (1875 – 1880) , Fort Clark Las Morus TX (1881 – 1883), Fort McHenry Baltimore MD (1884 – 1885), and Fort Columbus New Your (1887 – 1889). He continued to improve his rank being a lieutenant colonel at the end of the Civil war, and was made assistant surgeon general in 1891. He retired from the service the following year.
