Notes for Virginia Lois PENNOCK
VIRGINIA PENNOCK STRAUB
ON OCTOBER 25, 2001 AT AGE 90
A frequent exhibitor at Tequesta Lighthouse Gallery, Ginny had been a member there since 1975. While the walls of her home in North Passage are covered with Ginny's bright paintings, she had many varied interests. Up until last year, at age 89, she regularly played golf and tennis at the Riverbend Club. She was an avid fan of ballroom dancing and won a dance contest as recently as 1997. (She had the trophy to prove it.)
Ginny's interest in a great variety of activities has been a strong personality trait since childhood days in Landsdowne, PA. Born February 1911, she attended Westtown School in Pennsylvania and then graduated in 1934 as a landscape architect from the Cambridge School of Architecture.
She married Gordon Straub on May 13, 1938. During World War II, when Gordon went off to Europe with the U.S. Army, Ginny worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
In the 1940's, just after the war, Ginny did something very few women had done at that time -- she earned her private pilot's license. She loved to talk about flying a Piper Cub.
As Ginny and Gordon got busy raising a family, they lived in Ohio and Connecticut before settling in Jupiter in 1975. Ginny's grandfather, Abram Liddon Pennock had moved to Jupiter around 1895 to raise asparagus ferns for the family florist business in Philadelphia.
For many decades the Straub's would take their summer vacation at Pointe aux Barques on Lake Huron in Michigan. Tequesta was home to Ginny but she loved her summer cottage on the lake.
Her husband, Gordon, preceded her in death in 1991. She is survived by a daughter, Judith, a son Robert and granddaughters, Katherine and Robin.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 10th at 2:30 p.m. at the Riverbend Country Club in Tequesta.
In lieu of flowers, friends may want to make a contribution to Hospice or to the Westtown School, Westtown Road, Westtown, PA 19395.
Ginny is, Goin' home, goin' home, it's a long long way. Not too far down the road, goin' home to stay.
