Notes for William Parvin BROBSON

William P. Brobson, lawyer, business figure, politician, editor and Quaker wqs a man whose taste for a party battle was marked by a zest for the niceties of a literary controversy. When Brobson commenced his diary in 1825, he was 39 years old, and in that year he was married to Elizabeth Tatnall Starr and elected to the state legislature. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1786 and received his early education at the Friends School in Wilmington before studying law at the office of a local attorney. Admitted to the bar in 1810, he made the not uncommon transition from lawyer to politician by running successfully for the state legislature in 1820. Brobson became editor of the Delaware Journal, a position which he assumed in 1833, and two years later became secretary; to the Board of Directors of the Wilmington and Susquehanna Railroad Company. In 1838 Borbson left the newspaper; and was named first cashier of the Union Bank of Delaware, a post which he retained until 1848. The following year the Whig party stalwart was rewarded by President Zachary Taylor with the post of collector of customs for the District of Delaware. But it was a short tenure, for he died in office the following year.
