Date: July 7, 2002 Page: B11 Section: Obituary Dana Laird of Cambridge, a doctoral student, died Tuesday in a traffic accident. She was 36.
Ms. Laird grew up in Dallas. After graduating from Princeton University, she lived in Japan for a year and taught English. An extensive traveler, she was in Beijing's Tiananmen Square at the time of the June 1989 killings. She escaped Beijing on the trans-Siberian Railroad to Moscow. In 2000, she spent two months in India.
Ms. Laird recently earned a master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. At the time of her death was working on a doctorate in international relations.
Ms. Laird ran marathons, including the Boston Marathon, and competed in triathlons. She recently took a kayaking trip through Alaska.
She leaves her husband, Kenji Nakano of Rye, N.Y.; her parents, Dr. and Mrs. W. Pennock Laird of Dallas; a brother, Penn of Dallas; and a sister, Kelly Phillips of Fort Worth.

A funeral will be held in Texas.
