Notes for Francis Judson III LAIRD

Francis Judson Laird, III, "Jud" Word has been received of the death of Francis Judson Laird, III, "Jud", at his home in Jupiter, FL, on Wed. March 27, 2013. He was born on July 5, 1937 in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was descended from one of Pennsylvania's founding families Joseph Pennock who was a friend of William Penn who had given him a land grant on which he built Primitive Hall in 1738 in southern Chester County.
Jud was also a descendent of one of Jupiter's pioneer families who operated a plantation which supplied the Philadelphia florist J. Liddon Pennock with asparagus ferns. Jud grew up in Rose Valley where he graduated from Nether Providence High School (now Strathhaven H.S.) being class president. He was a graduate of Dickinson College in PA where he was member of the 1959 Championship Lacrosse team.
Following graduation he worked for American Home Products where he was the youngest account manager for terramycin. From there he worked for Flying Magazine where he could pursue his love of flying in his Beechcraft Bonanza. He loved to travel and had been to many countries and all 50 states. His last trip was to be to Ireland with his brother, brother's wife and Jud's friend.
The trip will continue in his memory. Jud moved to Jupiter in the early 1970's to raise his 4 children. Jud was on the Board of Directors of the Loxahatchee River Historical Society and had always been active in historical preservation such as the original Palm Beach County courthouse and Jupiter's Lighthouse Museum.
In recent years Jud had gained permission from the State of FL to locate and salvage a circa 1585 Spanish galleon. It was his dream to "make this happen". For the past 15 years one of Jud's greatest passions was organizing an annual Christmas shopping spree to benefit disadvantaged children at the Jupiter Head Start program.
He would "adopt" as many kids as requested to make sure they had presents under the tree on Christmas morning. Survivors: his four children: Jane - Salt Lake City, Bonnie (Dan Owen) - Wellington, Christine (David Foster) - Tequesta, and Jud (Jose Net) - Miami Beach, and his five grandsons: Matthew Owen (Tessy) - Jupiter, Laird Hensler and Jim Hensler - Salt Lake City, Stephen Owen - Wellington, and Will Foster - Tequesta, brother Dr. Penn Laird (Sydney) of Dallas, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends he has made over the years.
Jud was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betsy Laird. Services: In honor of his memory, the Jupiter Lighthouse was lit blue on Monday. There had been a memorial service in Florida on April 1st. His ashes will be scattered in the Gulf Stream per his wishes on Sunday, May 5 and there will be a local memorial service, Sunday, June 2nd, at the Old Mill in Rose Valley, PA. In Lieu of flowers: the family has requested that donations be made to the Jupiter Lighthouse and Museum, 500 Captain Armour's Way, Jupiter, FL 33469.
