Notes for John Edwards Jr. LEONARD
John Edwards Leonard, a Representative from Louisiana, was born September 22, 1845, near Fairville, Chester county, and was the only child of John E. and Mary H. Leonard. He died of yellow fever at Havana, March 15, 1878. He was a graduate of Harvard University, and he completed his studies at Heidelberg, Germany, receiving the degree of Doctor of Laws. He settled in Louisiana in 1870, practiced law the Thirteenth District of the State, and became a Judge of the Supreme Court. Finally he was elected to the Forty-fifth Congress and died while a member.
Though so young a man, Mr. Leonard was a ripe scholar. He was the author of some legal works, and a volume of poems of considerable promise, published in 1871. The memorial addresses delivered in Congress April 18, 1878, show that he had acquired quite a standing among his fellow members, and testify a universal regret at his untimely end.
