Notes for William BIDDLE

William BIDDLE, b. 1630, near London, England; left that city July, 1681, and came to New Jersey; he is said to have been an officer in the Parliamentary Army during the Civil War in England, but soon after its close joined the Society of Friends; his name appears among the list of persons imprisoned by Major BROWN, 1660-1661, for attending (non-conformist) meetings. Esther BIDDLE, his mother, an eminent Friend, suffered persecution for (Truth's Sake) at various periods; he d. 1712, at Mt. Hope, West Jersey; will proved 3d March, 1711-1712. Purchased 23d January, 1676, of William PENN, Garber LAURIE, Nicholas LUCAS and Edward BYLLANGE a one-half share of the lands in Western Jersey and became therefore one of the Proprietors of that Province. His later purchase gave him 1¾ shares of the 16 shares into which the Province was divided, entitling him to 43,000 acres. Settled in West Jersey in 1681; Member of the Governor's Council 1682-1685 and 1701. and of the General Assembly of the
Province, 1683, 1684-1685 and 1702; was a Justice of Burlington County from 1682 until his death; one of the Trustees selected by the Proprietors to conduct the business of the Proprietorship, 14th February, 1687, and regularly re-elected thereafter, serving as President of the Board of Trustees, 1706-1707.; one of the Board of Commissioners for laying out lands; Member of Council of Proprietary of West Jersey, 1682, re-elected 15th March, 1683; m. 7th December, 1665, at Bishopgate Street Friends Meeting in London, England, Sarah KEMF, b. 1634,
d. 27th February, 1709.
