Lt. Samuel Canby commanded a battery of four 12-pounder Napoleons and Capt. Alexander Marshall a
battery of six 3-inch rifled guns at Franklin. Their artillery inflicted severe damage upon the Confederate troops, both during the Southern advance and in the midst of the heavy fighting along the Union breastworks. During the November 30 battle these guns fired over 1,100 rounds of solid shot, spherical case, fused shell, percussion shell, case shot, and canister.
