Notes for Timothy KIRK

Timothy Kirk, for many years, was extensively engaged in business. Was a member of the State Legislature for several sessions. He owned, at one time, half the land on which the borough of Oxford is situated. While residing in Oxford he owned a hotel, store and several farms and mills. Prior to the completion of the railroad from Philadelphia to Baltimore, the main stage road led through Oxford -- this place being a station and one of the "relays". Timothy Kirk was interested in this "line of stages" and in running cars on the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the year 1837 he became pecuniarily involved. To escape trouble he departed, and finally sailed for Europe, and remained on the continent for some time. In 1839 he proposed returning, and embarked for Boston, but never reached America. In the early months of that year several sailing vessels were shipwrecked on the New England coast, all the passengers being lost. It is generally supposed that he was on board one of these vessels and was one of the ill-fated number.
