Notes for William Llewellyn SMEDLEY

"Wm. L. Smedley, QM - 5th Regt, P.R.V.C." Smedley was mustered into Company K, 34th Pennsylvania Volunteers, on June 21, 1861, serving until being transferred to the 191st Pennsylvania Infantry on June 6, 1864. The 5th Pennsylvania Reserves (also known as the 34th Pennsylvania Volunteers) were recruited from the counties of Centre, Lancaster, Huntington, Lycoming, Northumberland, Clearfield, Union and Bradford. Upon its arrival on the field at Gettysburg, the 5th Pennsylvania Reserves was for a time held in reserve in the vicinity of Little Round Top. When this coveted position was attacked by Confederate General John Bell Hood's Division, southern soldiers poured through the little valley between Round Top and Little Round Top, threatening the rear of Colonel Joshua Chamberlain's 20th Maine. Colonel Joseph W. Fisher of the 5th Pennsylvania was ordered to advance, gaining the summit of Round Top in time to share in the victory.

They settled in Columbia, Pa. on Second St., but removed to Marietta in the fall of 1871. He is a machinist by occupation, but from 1874-1891 did an extensive business in sewing machines: since which he has been in the employ of the Marietta Mfg. Co.; is connected with the Presbyterian Church, and has filled the offices of chief burgess, judge and inspector of elections.
