Notes for Edwin Walton KENDIG

Edwin Walton Kendig 1923 - 2011 Edwin Walton Kendig, 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away at home on February 28, 2011 after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. He hung in for a family celebration of his birthday and died the next day. Born into a Quaker family in West Grove, PA, Ed was the middle child of three. When he was two years old, his parents, Raymond and Mary Kendig, drove him, his brother Tom (3) and sister Ellen (1), and an adult cousin across the country. When Ed was 10, the Long Beach earthquake of 1933 shook the family's house off its foundation, forcing them to move. Thus began Ed's fascination with earthquakes. He also became an avid hiker, camper, backpacker, rock climber, folk dancer and lifetime member of the Sierra Club. Ed served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-45. He earned a degree in civil engineering from College of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. For 35 years he worked for the Department of Building and Safety in Los Angeles, checking building plans and assessing damaged buildings after quakes. On June 13, 1964, Ed and Florence Evelyn Geertz ("Bobbi") married at Orange Grove Friends Meeting in Pasadena. They raised three children, were active in school affairs and became members of Marloma Long Beach Friends Meeting. Ed retired in 1987 and developed a fondness for travel, especially to Fiji where he and Bobbi had invested in property. They became annual visitors to Fiji until Ed's disease worsened. Ed's quiet presence, his wit, his inventiveness with language and his genial smile are sorely missed. Survivors include his wife, Bobbi Kendig; son, David Kendig (Susan); daughters, Susan Kendig (Darryl) and Lisa Kendig Black (Eric); brother, Tom Kendig; sister, Ellen Kendig Lewis; and five grandchildren: Megan, Nicholas, Jack Edwin, Lloyd and Alex.
