Truman W. Read, 86, of Media, a retired banking executive who was active in his community, died of heart failure Wednesday at home.
In 1956, Mr. Read and his wife, Margaret Palmer Read, were active with the community organization that established the Middletown Library. He was later president of the board of the Delaware County Library Association. While serving as president of the J. Lewis Crozer Library in Chester in the 1960s, he was instrumental in moving the library to a larger facility, opening a branch, and seeking public funding for the library.
Mr. Read was formerly on the Rose Tree Media school board and served a term as president. He also served on the boards of Chester Hospital and of the Elwyn Institute for many years.
His son, Bok, said that when his father was 12, he built a rowboat and sailed it across the Delaware River, combining what would be a lifelong love of woodworking and boating.
He graduated from Chester High School and attended Drexel University. During World War II, he was a foreman in the hull department at Sun Shipyard in Chester.
After the war, he was a manager and eventually became vice president of the Excelsior Saving Fund, which became Security Savings in Media.
For several years after he retired in the late 1970s, he was a framer at Avondale Art Gallery in Frazer.
He enjoyed designing and making furniture and cabinets and sailing, skiing, camping and gardening.
His wife of 59 years died in 2001. In addition to his son, he is survived by his daughter, Sara Timmons; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Media Monthly Meeting, 124 W. Third St., Media. Burial is private.
