Margaret Palmer Read, 82, of Middletown, co-founder of the Middletown Free Library and active member of Media Friends Monthly Meeting, died March 13 at Riddle Memorial Hospital.
Born in Chester, Mrs. Read moved to Middletown in 1935. In 1956, she was one of a group of volunteers who bought an old school bus, converted it into a bookmobile, and drove it through the township on a regular basis.
After getting tax support, the group began operating the library in an old home at the present location in Lima. Mrs. Read worked there until her retirement in 1986. For many years until its closing she served on the Board of The Harned, a Quaker home for the elderly in Moylan.
Mrs. Read graduated from Friends Select School in Philadelphia, and the College of William and Mary in Virginia. She was an active member of Media Friends Monthly Meeting.
Mrs. Read had a lifelong passion for learning and all genres of literature. Her interests were her family, music, gardening and travel.
Survivors: Husband of 59 years, Truman W. Read; daughter, Sara Timmons; sons, Walter P. "Bok" Read, Truman W. "Hank" Read Jr.; sister, Laura Crouse; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson.
Service: 2 p.m. April 28, Media Friends Monthly Meeting, Third Street, Media.
