Notes for John ROSS
John Ross, the son of an Episcopal clergyman, who had been the assistant Rector of Christ Church in Philadelphia, but at the time of their marriage was the Rector of a Church at Newcastle, Delaware.
John Ross was an upholster's apprentice. Betsy was 21 at the time of the marriage. They were married at Hugg's Tavern, now in possession of the Gloucester County Historical Society.
They returned to Pa.that same day, but being fearful of the reaction of their parents, they kept the marriage a secret for nearly a year, until it was made public in the Spring of 1774. When the fact was known, the Arch St. Friends Meeting disowned Betsy for her "disobedient conduct".
John Ross was killed in the Revolutionary War in January of 1776. Betsy stayed in the little house on Arch St. John and Betsy (Griscom) Ross had no children.
John Ross' uncle was Col. George Ross, a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. It was he who introduced Gen.George Washington to Betsey Ross.
