Notes for George III EMLEN

George Emlen, 3d, the elder, born Aug. 21, 1718, succeeded his father in the brewing business, and had a town house on Chestnut Street. He erected a country seat in the White Marsh Valley above Chestnut Hill, known as the Emlen House, where Washington had his head-quarters at one time in 1777. He signed the Non-importation Resolutions. Married Dec. 25, 1740, Anne Reckless, daughter of Joseph and Mary Reckless, of Chesterfield, N. J. Died Jan. 3, 1776. His widow died Feb. 4, 1816.

Geo. Emlen. of Phila. Merchant. ---. 23 Jan 1776. Wife: Ann. Children: George, Caleb, Joseph, Samuel and James, Mary Beveridge, Margaret Howell and Anna. The Hospital at Bettering House of Phila. Trustees: Benj. Hooton, Joseph Bacon and Hezekiah Williams. No Exec. Letters of Admin: Ann, Geo., Caleb and Joseph Emlen.
