He spoke eight languages, traveled to Holland last year and was planning a trip to Venezuela and Europe for next year.
''He loved to go and visit old friends,'' said Peggy Giulini of her father, Willem A. Jansen.
Mr. Jansen, 87, of 5150 Sharon Rd. died Tuesday, May 17, 1988, at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, of a heart attack.
A native of the Netherlands, Mr. Jansen was a civil engineer for Shell International Petroleum, working in the Far East, Europe, South America and the United States before his retirement.
''He always enjoyed meeting new people, and he was often asked to translate letters for people who had language programs,'' Giulini said.
In 1938, her father was in Venezuela to build a large dike that protects the area around Lake Maracaibo, a big oil-producing area, she said.
Mr. Jansen was a professor of petroleum engineering at the University of Zulia in Venezuela and a retired officer of the Dutch Air Force Reserve.
A U.S. resident since 1954, Mr. Jansen had lived in Charlotte for 16 years. Mr. Jansen played the violin and wanted others to enjoy music, his daughter said.
''He donated his violin to a music school here in Charlotte for a young promising violin student. This group came and gave a little musical concert at the Sharon Towers, and he was impressed with the quality of the playing,'' Giulini said.
Survivors are his wife, Ann; daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Hales of Durham, Mrs. Giulini; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday at Dilworth United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
