Notes for John JACKSON
Biography JOHN JACKSON, of Londongrove township, Chester county, born November 9, 1748, was one of the very contemporaries of Humphrey Marshall, who sympathized cordially with his pursuits. The common mind, at that period, was otherwise engaged. He commenced a Botanic Garden, at his residence, soon after that at Marshallton was established, and made a highly interesting and valuable collection of rare and ornamental plants; which is still maintained in appropriate condition by his son, William Jackson, Esq. John Jackson was a
very successful cultivator of vegetable curiosities, a respectable Botanist, and one of the most gentle and obliging men. The youthful votaries of amiable science'were never happier, than when they could spend a day in the beautiful
garden of John Jackson, under the kind auspices if the intelligent and indulgent Proprietor. He died on the 20th of December, 1821, aged 73 years.
