Notes for Peter BEESON
Peter Beeson , went down the Ohio in a boat from Pittsburgh in 1771. The crew were massacred by Indians near Georgetown, Virginia, some miles below the mouth of the Big Beaver. After a time he was taken to Florida, where he lived on the Tombigbec River for a time, and was then taken to Pensocola. He became a leader among the Indians, and in a war between the Spaniards and the Indians, he was taken prisoner by the Spaniards. He was confined in a fortress by the bay. He excaped from his prison by dropping into the water and swimming across a narrow neck, reaching the main shore, nine miles away in safety.
After an absence of twenty years, he returned to Uniontown and remained a year among lhis brothers. But the tastes and habits of twenty years of life among the Indians could not be broken, so he returned to Florida. His family in Pennsylvania never again heard from him.
