Notes for Daniel Reed STILTZ

Artist and photographer was an early practitioner of daguerrotyping in Baltimore, working for the Jesse Whitehurst Gallery. He later specialized in "view photography," with a studio/office at 108 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. Sometime between 1860 and 1870, he relocated with his family to Williamsport.

He and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Marshall) Stiltz had four children as of 1880: Helen (b. 1861), who worked as a secretary at Christ Protestant Episcopal Industrial School in Williamsport; Mary (Stiltz) Sargent, Chester, and Daniel Dorey Stiltz.

He may have served during the Civil War with Co., C, Purnell's Legion, Maryland Infantry.

The family were all members of Christ Protestant Episcopal Church, Williamsport.
