Notes for Clarence Lee MCEACHERN
COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Dr. Clarence Lee McEachern, 76, of Columbia, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2002 at Washington Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Reverend Douglas A. Bowling. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7 this evening at the Parlor of Washington Street United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to Rotary International in care of Rotary Club of Spring Valley, Post Office Box 24342, Columbia, SC 29224, Sisters of Charity-Providence Hospitals, 2435 Forest Drive, Columbia, S C 29204, Vision Education Foundation, 11 North Montgomery Street, Memphis, TN 38104. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Great Falls, Dr. McEachern was a son of the late Furman Edward McEachern and Sara Bye McEachern, and served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He founded the Contact Lens Clinic of South Carolina, Dr.'s McEachern, Cannon, McClay and Associates, P.A., of Columbia. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, Diplomate in Contact Lenses and Distinguished Practitioner, National Academy of Practice in Optometry. His professional career had been devoted to contact lens practice. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Southern College of Optometry, Dr. McEachern had served as president of the Southern College of Optometry, the South Carolina Optometric Association, and the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Optometry. He served as Chairman of the Contact Lens Committee of the American Optometric Association and as a member of the Opthalmic Devices Panel of the Food and Drug Administration. He was a member and past president of the American Society of Contact Lens Specialists, a member of the International Society of Contact Lens Specialists, A Grand Honours Fellow and 1987 Leonardo da Vinci Medallist of the National Eye Research Foundation and was on the Advisory Board for the Laser Center in Greenville. He was a Rotarian with 34 years of perfect attendance, was Charter President of the Columbia-Capital Rotary Club, 1987-88, and Columbia-Capital Rotary Clubs' Rotarian of the Year, 1993, and presently was an active member of the Rotary Club of Spring Valley.
Surviving are his wife, Dr. Rebecca Rawlinson McEachern of Columbia; daughter, Barbara M. Whatley and husband, Michael, of Atlanta; son, Lee McEachern and wife, Alice, of Columbia; daughter, Nancy M. Price of Santa Fe, N.M.; stepson, Berke Chestnut and wife, Ann of Lexington; stepdaughter, Dawn Elizabeth Monge of Columbia; five grandsons; brother, Ted McEachern and wife, Woodley, of Nashville, Tenn.
