Notes for Elizabeth S. MCEACHERN
LEXINGTON - Services for Elizabeth M. Harkey, 86, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Shandon United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Michael L. Guffee, Sr., with burial at Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church, Tri County Hospice, the American Bible Society, or the American Red Cross.
Mrs. Harkey died Saturday, September 25, 1999. She was born in Rion, SC, and grew up in Fairfield County, the oldest child of Sara and Furman McEachern. In 1935 she married Harry D. Harkey, Jr., who predeceased her in 1964. She practiced nursing in Columbia from 1944 until 1985. She worked first in an OB-GYN practice for Dr. William Augustus Hart and later served as Chief Nurse for the American Red Cross Blood Collection Program. Mrs. Harkey was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church and member of the Captain John Chappell Chapter of Colonial Dames of XVII Century. She was predeceased by sisters, Emily M. Fincher and Mary McEachern; brother, Furman E. McEachern.
Surviving are her daughter, Bevan C. Weyburn of Lexington; sons, Harry D. Harley, III and wife, Martha Taylor Harkey of Winston Salem, NC, Philip H. Harkey and wife, Karen Caulder of Charleston, SC; granddaughter, Laura Baldwin of California; brothers, Dr. Clarence L. McEachern of Columbia, Reverend Theodore B. McEachern of Nashville, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
