Notes for George Brinton MCCLELLAN
George Brinton McClellan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 3 December 1826. He graduated, second in his class, from the United States Military Academy in 1846. McClellan is perhaps best known for his service as General-in-Chief of the Union Army, 1861-1862, during the War Between the States. In 1864, he ran as the Democrat candidate for President of the United States, but lost the race to Abraham Lincoln. He went on to serve as the governor of New Jersey, from 1878-1881. George Brinton McClellan died in Orange, New Jersey, on 29 October 1885.
