Notes for Joseph BEALE

Son of John Beale and Tamar Bourgoin. Husband of Margaret McDowell.

Joseph and Margaret married 25 October 1810, and were the parents of seven children: James McDowell Beale, John Bourgoin Beale, Dr. Joseph Beale, Harriet M. Beale Mills Law, Horace Binny Beale, Elizabeth Jane Beale Fales and Horace Alexander Beale.

Joseph was two years, seven months old at the death of his father, John Beale. Supposed to have been the fifth child. Raised by his grandfather, William Beale.

Joseph married Margaret McDowell, on October 25, 1810. Margaret the youngest daughter of Captain James and Elizabeth (Loughead) McDowell, of Oxford Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Joseph was placed by his grandfather as an apprentice with Benanial Odgen, Cabinet-Maker, near West Chester. After which he went to Philadelphia and became a manufacturer of funiture in the firm of "Beale and Jemison". In his later years, he contracted to have a mansion built in Downingtown, but died before it was constructed. His son, James, who had come to Chester County from Philadelpha in 1830, fulfilled his father's verbal contract and completed the house. James later sold this house and bought a large tract of land in Caln with a beautiful mansion on it, where the Beales lived for three more generations, now the property of the Veterans Administration Hospital.

Joseph married Margaret McDowell October 25, 1810 and were the parents of seven children, five sons and two daughters.

Joseph and Margaret are both buried at Old Pine Street Church, Fourth and Pine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
