Notes for Hunt DOWNING
From "Chester County and its People", by W. W. Thomson, 1898: "(Hunt Downing) began tavern keeping at the Washington Tavern, in Downingtown, 1786, and continued in that occupation for many years. He was the first postmaster at Downingtown, and at the time of the Whisky Insurrection was
quartermaster to some of the troops encamped near the tavern."
VILLAGE RECORD, Chester county, February 19, 1834: 'Death Notice. Hunt Downing an old and respectable inhabitant of the Great Valley, died at his residence in West Whiteland on Friday last. He had been much in active life; a public house keeper, an extensive Stage Proprietor, and a Director of the Bank of Chester county, until about two years since, when infirmities brought on by increasing age, induced him very wisely to resign his situation as Director, and lessen his business responsibilities. The companion of his early life, and his tender solace under the weight of affliction, was taken from him about two months since; for some time previous to which he was afflicted with a paralysis, which unfitted him for active life. He has gone to bourne whence no traveller return - at a ripe old age - and the recollections of his kindness and his usefulness will be pleasing to his family and numerous friends.' 1
