linas Campaign. Bentonville (commanded the Army of
the Tennessee from July 1864)
Post-war achievements: first commissioner of the "Freed
men's Bureau", bank director, served in indian country
helped found Howard University. superintendent of West
Point various departmental commands, aided to establish
Lincoln Memorial University. author, speaker
Date of death: October 26, I909
Place of burial: Lake View Cemetery. Burlington,
Vermont
