Notes for Thomas STUBBS

Thomas Stubbs, the immigrant ancestor, came (according to tradition) from England to Pennsylvania about the year 1718. His first appearance here was as a single man in the tax list of Goshen Township, [just east of West Chester] Chester County, in 1719. As a member of the Friends' Meeting of Goshen, he requested a certificate from Chester Monthly Meeting, Seventh Month 26th, 1720, of his clearness from other engagements, in order to accomplish his marriage to Mary Minor, a member of the Kennett Monthly Meeting, and also to settle within the limits of the latter meeting. This marriage took place in the Ninth Month, 1720, probably at Old Kennett Meeting House. After this he was taxed in Bradford Township, 1721 to 1743, but probably resided in what was later known as Newlin Township. Here he was a member of Bradford Meeting of Friends, at first a branch of Kennett, but established as a separate Monthly Meeting in 1737. In 1756 he and his wife removed from Newlin to Concord Township, Chester (now Delaware) County, and there he died in 1763; his will being dated February 25th and proved March 16th of that year. His wife, Mary, died a few years previously.
