Notes for Elisha GATCHELL

Elisha GATCHEL, Sr. was born about 1684 to 1685, possibly in England. One source states that he is the immigrant ancestor, while another suggests he may have descended from a John GATCHEL who had settled earlier at Salem, Massachusetts. Be that as it may, we find Elisha Sr. about 1706 in East Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania, being one of the people called Quakers. He died there during the winter of 1753-1754. Prior to 1706, Elisha Sr. married Rachel WILCOX, daughter of Sarah and Barnabas WILCOX, who had come from Bristol, England. They were Quakers and members of William Penn's Colony at Philadelphia, where Barnabas served as an alderman. Elisha Sr. was an important landowner, a Justice of His Majesty's Peace for Chester County, and one of the founders of the Old Brick Meeting House at East Nottingham (now at Calvert in Cecil County, Maryland, after the running of the Mason-Dixon Line).
