Notes for Elinor CARTER

Elinor was born in Laylock, Chester, Cheshire, England.

She was married twice. Her first husband was George Pownall, whom she wed about 1665 in Alderley, Great Warford, Cheshire, England. They had six children: Reuben about 1667, Elizabeth in 1670, Sarah in 1672, Rachel in 1675, Abigail about 1667 and George (Jr.) in 1782.

The family -- including the couple, five children and three servants -- migrated from Lostock Gralam, Cheshire, England to Solebury, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania on the ship 'Friends Adventure,' arriving on Sept. 28, 1682 (28th day of 7th month, 1682). Her husband died when a tree fell on him a month after arrival, and George (Jr.) was born in Solebury twelve days later.

She married Joshua Hoopes in 1693 at Monthly Meeting, Middletown, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.
