Notes for Clarence Thomas Jr. HARKNESS

Clarence, age 87, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, strong-willed with an enduring sense of humor.

Clarence was born in Wilmington on July 21, 1927 to Clarence Sr. and Mary Stewart Harkness. After graduating from Conrad High School, Class of 1945, Clarence joined the Merchant Marines with tours in Europe and Africa. Through ROTC and the University of Delaware, Class of 1951, he earned his BS in Accounting and went on to serve as a First Lieutenant, Artillery in the US Army from 1951 to 1953, with various assignments including Ft. Knox and West Germany.

It was while working for DuPont and earning his Master’s Degree from the University of Rochester that he meet his lovely wife, Helen. He retired from DuPont as a senior-level Financial Accounting Superintendent in 1985. He traveled the world during his 35-year career, planning wonderful family vacations both overseas and in the States.

An avid sports fan, Clarence loved golf, tennis, bowling, skiing and volleyball, and played several college intermural sports. He was a loyal Philadelphia sports fan and loved his Delaware Blue Hens! He took pride in his garden and bringing his homegrown fruits and vegetables to the table.

Along with his wife, Helen (Zienkiewicz) of nearly 60 years, Clarence is also survived by his sister, Ruth Whitlock; his oldest son, Donald and his wife, Debbie; daughter, Nancy Campbell and her husband, Tim; and youngest son, David and his wife, Virginia. He has 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Marguerite Wysocki.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Tuesday, October 7 from 5:00-7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin on Wednesday, October 8 at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Ashland.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Clarence may be made to the Ministry of Caring, 506 N. Church Street, Wilmington, DE 19801, or a charity of your choice.
