Notes for Harry Earl Jr. HOOPES
It is with great sadness that the family of Harry E. Hoopes announces his passing on Sunday, September 10, 2017, just days after celebrating his 99th birthday with his family.
Harry was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Harry and Elsie Moore Hoopes. He was a member of the first graduating class of Pierre S. DuPont High School in 1936. Harry served in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific during World War II. After serving, he rejoined Hercules Powder Company where he worked until his retirement in 1980. Harry met his lovely wife, Janet Walls, at Hercules and they were married on September 20, 1958 in Manhattan. Harry was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was an avid golfer and was a longtime member of Hercules Country Club. He always had a happy and positive demeanor, and a good singing voice that he frequently used to teach old songs to his grandchildren.
Harry is preceded in death by his wife, Janet Walls Hoopes, his son Timothy Hoopes, MD and his sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Joseph Barkley.
He is survived by his son, H. Todd and wife Dorothy Hoopes of Oxford, MD, his daughter, Julie and husband James Ritter, MD of Hickory, NC, daughter, Diane and husband James Holt of Los Angeles, CA and daughter-in-law, Susan Hoopes of Rockville, MD. Harry is also survived by nine grandchildren; Meghan Palmer and her husband Philip, Hunter Hoopes, Sarah Hoopes, MD, Susan Hoopes, Sophie, Molly and Emily Ritter and Jonathon and Katherine Holt.
Services will be held at 1:30pm on Friday, October 13, 2017 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 West 13th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806. Reception to follow at Westminster. Interment will be private.
Contributions in Harry's memory may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
