Notes for Yvonne GAUSE

Yvonne Marie (Gause) Shilling, 85, of Providence, died June 7th, 2017. Originally from Wilmington, Delaware, she spent most of her last 63 years as a resident of the East Side. She was a muse, adventurer, world traveler, free spirit, and in every sense of the word, a true renaissance woman. She was a writer, poet, linguist, artist, teacher and gifted musician. She inspired those around her, young and old, to learn and seek their own path. Most of all, she enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A life-long learner, she attended University of Delaware and took classes at Brown University, Providence College and University College Galway. Her teaching experience included music, language and sports.
Always a political activist, she was a passionate member of many movements involving politics, civil rights, fair housing, and education. Most of all, she loved welcoming foreigners to our country, assisting them to adjust and teaching them ESL. She was part of many musical societies and entertained by playing her guitar, accordion, or piano. She enjoyed writing personal anecdotes, poems and op-eds, many published in Providence Journal, Wilmington News Journal and magazines. She was an avid cyclist who enjoyed the outdoors.
Organizations she was involved with are too numerous to list, serving as board member on many. Highlighted are International Institute, International House of RI, Barker Theater, various language and musical societies, Providence Committee on Foreign Relations, and the World Affairs Council of RI, of which she was executive director for many years. In this position, she was a good-will ambassador, traveling to many countries, meeting and discussing political and social issues with world leaders.
She was the daughter of F. Gregory Gause and Catherine I. Dougherty of DE. She was also predeceased by her 2 husbands, Gilbert A. Miller of DE, Matthew L. Shilling of RI, and her beloved son, Gerard Shilling. Yvonne is survived by a brother, F. Gregory Gause Jr. (Patricia) of DE, and three children, Christine M. Wainwright (Peter) of SC, Gabriel Shilling of CO and Monica Manooshian of RI. She will be greatly missed by her seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Yvonne's name to: www.aamds.org, an international foundation for Aplastic Anemia and bone marrow diseases. Yvonne's son succumbed to this disease as a child. A memorial service is planned for a future date.
